The Battle of the Little Bighorn was fought near the Little Bighorn River in eastern Montana Territory. It was a war between the Natives (Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho) against the US Seventh Calvary (a group of 700 men). The battle occurred on June 25-26, 1876. The Battle of the Little Bighorn was the most prominent action of the Great Siox War of 1876. The Native Americans won the battle.
The leader of the Seventh Calvary (General George Armstrong Custer) saw the Natives along the Little Bighorn River. He didn't wait for back up and he led an attack with 264 of his men down on the natives. The result was the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Seventh Calvary was there because there was gold in the Black Hills (which is were the Lakota live).
"Custer's Last Stand" is where General George Armstrong Custer died. Custer died in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. No one knows how he died. They didn't identify his body until after the war was over. Several natives took credit for killing him including White Bull of the Miniconjous, Rain-in-the-Face, Flat Lip and Brave Bear. Custer was the leader of the Seventh Calvary. Bringing him down was great progress and a great over coming to win the war.
